Personal, social, and emotional development is crucial for children to lead happy and healthy lives.  It plays a role in children understanding emotional regulation, social skills, self awareness and physical and mental health.  Strong, supportive, and warm relationships with adults are paramount. They allow children to explore and understand their own feelings and the feelings of others.

Children should be supported in managing their own feelings and develop a positive sense of self.  A growth mindset is key as young learners develop confidence in their own abilities and persist in new tasks and unfamiliar challenges.  With guidance and support children should learn how to look after their bodies and manage their personal needs.

The central theme of ‘Good Morning May’ is perseverance.  Mum’s clever idea of talking to animals, trees and flowers develops May’s confidence.  It shows young learners that sometimes we don’t get things right first time. To have the skills and self-belief to do it well, all we need to do is practice and try again.  This can be anything from washing our hands properly, to independently putting on our shoes, writing our names to remembering the capital letters and full stops of a sentence.

Emotional Regulation:

Emotional regulation helps children understand and manage their emotions. It teaches them to recognise and express their feelings in appropriate ways, which is essential for building emotional resilience and coping with stress and challenges. Throughout our story May experiences a range of feelings.  It is important for children to be able to name their feelings so that they can discuss and describe them. Follow this links below for discussion points in helping your child name their emotions and a vocabulary card for support.

Building Independence and Creating Routines

As our children grow it is important for them to develop independence in their own self care and hygiene.  One way to do this is through routine.  When children have clear goals and an understanding of what is expected of them they can thrive.  Follow the link to download resource that can help develop healthy routines and promote independence.

Health and Well Being

Heath and well being promotes a healthy lifestyle of self-care, hygiene, physical activity and healthy eating. Eating a balanced healthy diet is part of a healthy body.  At the end of our story May has ice cream.  Discuss whether this is healthy or unhealthy.  What foods are good for our bodies, food we should eat every day?  What foods should we have as a treat and only eat every now and then?  Follow the link to download resources that can help promote a healthy diet.
